Resources for Diversity, Inclusion and Equity in the Classroom
ACTR DEAI Reading Group meeting on May 6 at 5:30 pm EST
In this reading group we plan to focus on specific classroom adaptations that can easily be made to promote greater diversity, equity, access and inclusion in the realm of Russian language teaching and learning.
Our starting point will be the most recent issue of ACTR's Russian Language Journal, which is devoted specifically to DEIA: "Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion: Lessons for the Russian Language Classroom." Many thanks to Colleen Lucey, guest editor, and to all of the contributors to this groundbreaking issue. For the first meeting, Tom Garza has agreed to lead a discussion of his article "Here, There, and Elsewhere: Re-Imagining Russian Language and Culture Course Syllabi for Social Justice." He will begin with a 15-20 minute presentation of specific types of applications he has found successful at promoting a more inclusive and accessible classroom. Then we will go into breakout groups for 15-20 minutes to brainstorm how we might apply these ideas to our own classroom situations. The breakout groups will be facilitated by Tom and other members of the DEAI and Professional Development Committees. After the breakout groups, we will reconvene for 15-20 minute to share ideas.
All members of ACTR are invited, representing all types and levels of educational settings. You're encouraged, but not required, to read the article in advance. You'll find a pdf of the article attached for your convenience.
