Nominations to ACTR Officer (President and Vice President)

As designated by the ACTR Rules of Governance (Bylaws), the officers of ACTR shall be a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Executive Director. The President and Vice President of ACTR shall be nominated by the ACTR Board of Directors from among its members. Any group of five active members of ACTR may nominate a candidate or candidates for President and/or Vice President of ACTR by forwarding to the Secretary of ACTR the name(s) of the nominee(s) at least twenty-one (21) days before the annual meeting of the membership of ACTR.

This year Alla Smyslova, our current Vice President, has stepped down both from the Board and as Vice President. The Nominations Committee has not taken upon itself the solicitation of candidates for Vice President, leaving this to the discretion of the Board and of the general membership. If a Vice President is elected in the current cycle, they/she/he shall serve the remainder of Alla Smyslova's term, that is, through the February 2024 general meeting. As Vice President, they/she/he shall automatically become a member of the Board for their term as Vice President, provided the Board has not exceeded its limit, as dictated by the bylaws, of twenty-five members. Although not dictated by the bylaws, balanced representation across K-12 and post-secondary constituencies has traditionally been served by the President and Vice President each representing one of the two. Ideally, Alla Smyslova's replacement would represent ACTR's post-secondary constituency.

As indicated in the bylaws, just as Board members, candidates for President and Vice President may be nominated through one of two streams:
  • Nomination of a current Board member by the Board of Directors through its Nominations Committee;
  • "Open nomination" of a current Board member by the general membership to be submitted to the Secretary of ACTR.
Candidates from both streams shall appear on a single ballot to be voted on by the general membership. All candidates should familiarize themselves with the Board Nomination Rubric.

PROTOCOLS FOR NOMINATIONS THROUGH THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINATION COMMITTEE
The protocols for placing nominees for Vice President on the ballot remain unchanged, except that elections have been moved online.
  • Current Board members who want to nominate themselves or another Board member to assume the office of Vice President should notify the chair of the nominations committee greener@grinnell.edu no later than November 30, 2022. No additional letters of support are required when nominating a current Board member. Should you wish to offer a letter of support, upload it to this upload letter of support link.
  • Once the chair of the Nominations Committee has certified that the nominee accepts the nomination, the nominee will be asked to fill out the Officer candidate form and upload any supplementary materials, as instructed. The candidate form must be completed no later than December 14, 2022.
PROTOCOLS FOR "OPEN NOMINATIONS" FROM THE ACTR GENERAL MEMBERSHIP
The protocols for advancing nominees from the general membership for the office of Vice President remain unchanged, except that elections have been moved online. Following the bylaws, all candidates who are not currently members of the Board must solicit five letters of support.
  • If nominating oneself, indicate your intentions to the Secretary of ACTR (rookj@glastonburyus.org) at your earliest convenience, and submit the Officer Officer candidate form and upload any supplementary materials, as instructed, by December 14, 2022.
  • If nominating someone else, please contact that person and, if they agree to be nominated, send an email to the Secretary of ACTR (rookj@glastonburyus.org) that includes your nominee as copied (to certify their agreement to be nominated), and ask them to fill out the Officer candidate form and to upload any supplementary materials, as instructed, no later than December 14, 2022.
All nominations from the general membership require the support of five ACTR members in good standing, including—if relevant—the support of the original nominator. Letters need not be lengthy, but should speak to the the candidate's strengths relevant to the rubric for evaluation adopted by the Board of Directors at its October 1, 2022 meeting, on the recommendation of the ACTR Committee for Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. Those writing in support of a nominee from the general membership may ask their candidate to provide them with at least a draft of their candidate form. Letters of support should be uploaded no later than 14 December to upload letter of support link.
